“And God said let there be light; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light day and the darkness he called night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.” (Genesis 1:3-5)
“These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created in the day that Lord God made the earth and the heavens. And every plant of the field before it was in the earth and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Genesis 2:4-9)
God created the heavens and the earth, and the first man and woman in His own image. The first humans had a soul, an eternal soul. For thousands of years, man has tried to measure, analyze and control the elements of creation and its laws. Science claims to have “found” the human genome, and companies are rushing to “patent” human genes for profit. Who but God, with His son, the Word of God (Jesus), created the human genome, as part of a beautiful and complex design for the procreation of children, who inherit from the combined genes of a mother and father. Two cells, created in an act designed for the love bond of a married couple, change from a gamete into a being with an entirely wondrous and marvelous body that includes an eternal soul, and which grows to fullness in the womb of a woman.
Let science try to extract light from darkness. Or let the geneticists create male and female genes that create a child as part of an act of love. Instead, they plant a genetic marker into a female egg in a laboratory, and get an exact copy of the creature whose genetic marker they extracted. Cloning is a form of idolatry. The worship uses a genetic marker to duplicate a living statue in honor of the donor. This plays with glorification of self, and created a soulless life form using God’s raw materials in a perverted, sinful, and non-intended way.
We can only begin to plumb the depth and breadth of the rich variety and complexity that God has wrought. We cannot create water or the oceans or the winds that drive the waves. We are fools to think that science explains everything. The laws that have been discovered by science are part of a deep and wide reality that is filled with spirit as well as matter. Even time was created with the world, and our implementation is based upon a diurnal sun. Einstein discovered mathematically that time slows at the speed of light, so time is not fixed dimension, as originally thought, but a dimension that conforms to its environment. We cannot fathom eternity, all time but not time driven, and yet forever without end, and yet the Bible promises us eternal life if we accept Jesus as our Savior and give him our heart, soul and mind. We take these things on faith, beyond our ability to understand, but part of our trust in Jesus and His Father for all things.
We live in an age of idolatry. Only the names and appearances have changed since the time of Baal. Science, humanism, work, homosexuality, wealth, politics, drinking, drugs, abortion and pornography can all become gods that blot out the light of the Son of God. We worship with our time, with our money, with our ignorance of those in need around us, by our selfishness, and by our blindness to the truth of our sinful nature. The unthinkable and faith based story of the divine creation of heaven and earth, and man and woman in Genesis is written for the glory of our Triune Creator, as a form of worship, using Divinely Inspired truth. This is not the language of science because God cannot be explained with facts and controlled experimental data. His ways are beyond our ways, and his abilities eclipse our abilities by unknowable amounts.
Who else can breathe life into dust and make a human in the same day (24 hours) that he created all the forms of life on the earth? Stand in awe, frail and humble creature, you are in the hands of a mighty God through His son who gave his perfect life that we might be free from sin. However, we are sinners saved by Grace, living among a wicked generation who are trying God’s patience in with all their might, running headlong along the wide road that leads to destruction. Those of us who can relate to God, can only cling to the cross and the Holy Spirit given to us by Grace, and accept our Lord as capable of far more than we could ever imagine.
