Choose This Day

Today, as it was in the land of Israel a long time ago, there are false gods in the land. These “gods” go by names such as a myriad of non-Christian religions, secular humanism, evolution, and all manner of false beliefs and practices. For indeed, they can’t all be right. If Christianity is right – and we proclaim that it is – then all these other ones must be wrong. For God himself declares, “I [am] the LORD; and [there is] none else.” (Isaiah 45:18c) And, Jesus, with authority, declares, “All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers.” (John 10:8)

The word of God (the Bible) declares that Jesus is to be worshipped. If this is so, then all these other beliefs and practices are wrong because they deny that Jesus was, and is, God come in the flesh, and that he died for our sins on a cross and was raised on the third day and will come back to judge the earth, as the Bible declares. In this, they lock themselves out of heaven, for it is only through the shed blood of Jesus Christ that one may enter into heaven, as the Scriptures declare: “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6) And again, “without shedding of blood is no remission [i.e. forgiveness]” (Hebrews 9:22b).

If you try to “get in” some other way, you’re going by the way of the thief and the robber. In the end, you’ll find out that you’ve been forever locked out of that one and only place that you ever really needed to get into — and it will be too late! Jesus said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14) And again, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

Can those who worship false gods possibly prosper in the end? The answer is no. There is no victory for those who worship false gods. But instead, the Bible only promises judgment. All they can expect is the terrible sound of God’s judgment one day, and an eternal condemnation from which they will never escape. As the Bible says, “[It is] a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Hebrews 10:31) Does this sound scary to you? If so, my suggestion is that you begin worshipping him instead of rejecting him, for in love, this same God sent his precious and beloved Son Jesus to die on a cross so that our sins might be paid for. That sounds like love to me.

Choose Jesus, and you will have chosen the way of God’s love and forgiveness – forever. Reject him, and you will not only miss out on the best gift you could have ever received but you will one day end up going to hell for it because you spurned the most precious gift of all, the gift of God’s Son in dying for you personally on the cross. And imagine, it was in your grasp, but you never reached out your hand to take hold of it. Choose this day whom you will serve. Like Joshua of old — who was blessed on account of his faith in the One and Only true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — may you be able to say, “as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15d)
