Permit me, if you will, to challenge you on a few points. In the Bible, it says that, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.” (Genesis 1:1-2). I think this is a good place to start. In other words, I think these verses provide us enough meat to chew on before moving on in our discussion. We need to stop and examine them before going any further.
One thing the Bible never does is try to prove the existence of God. Rather, it just assumes that God exists. That is demonstrated here in these verses. “In the beginning, God.” That is an awesome statement. It is also one which challenges us to believe what is written, based on faith. This statement just assumes God exists. And herein lies the great folly of a great many people. In their own “so-called wisdom,” they believe it makes more sense to believe that God does not exist than that He does exist. Yet if the existence of God truly needed an explanation, we could be sure that God would have provided it for us.
A little later in the Bible, we do get a “glimpse” of something which “proves” God’s existence. However, the reason that it is written is not in order to prove God’s existence, but rather man’s guilt! (Romans 1:20). In that verse, it condemns mankind for not believing, on account of the fact that it is so obvious that God exists. Now if it is so obvious that God exists, therefore, it makes sense (in Genesis 1:1-2) that there would be no need whatsoever to prove His existence.
Christian: Beware of anyone who argues with you about the existence of God. Deep in their spirit — according to this verse (Romans 1:20) — these people know already that He exists. It is not that they do not know that He exists. The Bible makes it very clear that all people know that He exists. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been CLEARLY SEEN, being understood through what was made, so that they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20).
We don’t need to argue with people, then, about the fact of God’s existence. Rather, why not befriend a person, and show them real love? This is the thing that Jesus said would cause “all men to believe.” “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35). In the world’s eyes, if there ever was a real and tangible “proof” for God’s existence, this is it!
