The Lord stopped me last night as I was reading some Scripture. At first, I didn’t want to stop. I just wanted to keep reading. So I kept reading right to the end of the chapter. But inside, I was deeply troubled by the fact that something was not right. You know something? That’s the way it is when we grieve the Holy Spirit. We can grieve him quite easily — yes, even by reading too much Scripture when God has told us to “stop” and wait upon him.

Waiting. It is so key to our accomplishing what God wants to accomplish in our lives. That’s right. “Our” accomplishing what God wants to accomplish in our lives. You read that right. We accomplish it. But God accomplishes it. You see, we are nothing if God doesn’t do it. Man’s efforts are as filthy rags in God’s sight if not directly empowered by the Holy Spirit. A whole lot of people will end up in hell one day, all because they simply would not listen to God. It’s really that simple.

Think for a moment. What are the things that you do each day? Are they God empowered or are they self-empowered? All of the God empowered things that you have done, or will do, will bless you in the end. All of those that are not God-empowered will curse you. There is no middle ground here. There are people walking as dead, because they will not listen to God. There are people who are living mummies, because they will not heed his voice.

How about you? Are you listening to God or are you doing your own thing?

“Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. Blessed [is] the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD. But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.” (Proverbs 8:33-36)
