How many times have you heard someone who is not living for Christ say something like, “I grew up in the church”. Or, “I went to church all the time”? Many people have “grown up” going to church, or attending church, and yet they are so far from the Lord. The Lord is simply not close to them, and they are not close to the Lord, and, by all reasonable judgment, they are not ready to make Christ their Lord and Savior anytime soon.
This is a mind-boggling issue. Think of how many people have been “raised” in the church. The numbers are staggering. But how many of these are actually faithfully serving the Lord? Comparatively few. In my own case, I was “raised” going to church, but the church was a liberal one, that did not press home the message of the gospel. Yet, by God’s grace, it was through a Sunday School teacher at that church that God was able to impart to me some vital spiritual truths, such as the deity and Lordship of Jesus Christ. It was much later that God used these to actually draw me to himself. But the seed had been planted.
Today, there are many — thousands, if not millions of people — walking around who are the “unchurched churched”. In other words, they are those who do not presently attend, or are a part of, a church, but used to be. Maybe they were forced to go as a child, and now see no point in being a part. Maybe, like in my own case, the gospel was simply never driven home in these churches. Yet, I am still convinced that though the church may have been a very weak one, God is able to use that experience in that person’s life to help draw them to himself.
Will you pray with me in asking God to reach the unchurched churched today? There is a tremendous harvest just waiting to happen in all of this. Let’s pray!
“Dear Heavenly Father, You love all people, and today we remember to pray for the unchurched churched. They are those who see no point in being a part of the church. Maybe they were let down when they were younger. Maybe someone betrayed them. Maybe they simply see no point. Maybe they never really heard the gospel. Today, Lord, we ask that you reach down into these peoples hearts and light the flame of passion for you, so that they might seek you afresh, and find you. For it is in Christ’s name that we pray. Amen.”
“From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.” (Acts 17:26-27, NIV)
