Recently, I was sitting at my computer, working away, when my wife got off the phone, and said to me, “Christine Hernandez just died of cancer”. Wow, that was a shock. This was the woman who we spoke with frequently, who provided a ‘safe courier service’ to send money to overseas relatives that we are supporting. And she just died. We didn’t even know that she had cancer.
In my own way of thinking, I never dreamed that this woman would die. But she died. And it all happened so very suddenly. This is a true, and very unfortunate story. And we don’t even know for sure whether or not she knew the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior! Where is Christine Hernandez now? I wonder if she made her ‘peace’ with God before she died. This woman, friends, is *gone* off the face of the earth! It all happened, so very suddenly!!! There was absolutely no warning!!!
If you were to die tonight, do you know where you would be going?
This is a very serious question. Yes, it could, and one day, will, happen to you!
My wife and I attended a very good church in our area, and the pastor drove home this same point, when he explained that just following a church service one day, two people got in a car and exited the driveway of the church and were immediately swept away into eternity as a result of a head-on collision with another vehicle. And then there is the case of the man named Dean that I used to meet on a regular basis at my place of work. I went away for two weeks on vacation several years ago, and when I had gotten back, I checked my e-mail, and one of the first ones said, “Dean is sick. You can go and visit him in hospital.” Then a little while later another e-mail said, “We are very sorry to have to tell you that Dean has died.” It all happened while I was away on vacation. In this case, Dean was only 39 — a year older than I am right now. There again, I used to see the man on a fairly regular basis at my place of work. In two weeks the man was gone. Just gone. Away. Never to return. Who witnessed to this man? Did he ever hear a clear presentation of the gospel?
The Bible says that today is the day of salvation. Don’t put it off another day. Christine now knows that there is a day in which it is all over. Dean knows that as well. Those people would never say to you now, “It’s okay to put it off.”
Don’t put it off another day.
Instead, they would cry out to you, “Don’t put it off another day! Make your peace with God while you still have the chance!”
You may be old right now, or you may be young. It doesn’t matter. Whatever your age, whatever your gender, whatever your background, you need to make your peace with God. How does a person do this? Simply by acknowledging that you need him, and that you can’t make it alone. You need to humble yourself to the point of asking Jesus Christ forgiveness for your sins. Ask him to clean you up. Ask him to make you his child, based on the following passage of Scripture:
“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” (John 1:12)
Again, Jesus said that you must be born again in order to get into heaven:
“Jesus answered and said unto him, ‘Verily, verily, (truly, truly) I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3)
How does a man become born again? By faith, and not by works.
“For by grace are [people] saved through faith; and that not of [themselves]: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
Are you ready? Please pray this prayer with me:
“Lord, I accept your perfect sacrifice for me in dying for me on the cross. I acknowledge that you are the only way. You died for my sins. I am a sinner. Be merciful to me! Thank you that you died in my place so that I might be entirely forgiven and brought into a right relationship with you! I accept your perfect sacrifice on my behalf. I’m not even going to try to work for it. I know now that it is a free gift that cannot be earned, only received. I choose to receive that gift right now. Lord, come into my heart and cleanse me from my sins. I ask this in Jesus name, Amen.”
“…whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)
