Touch not the unclean thing

I was engaged in an email conversation once, a long time ago, with a fellow who was obviously a little upset with me. Not a bother. I’m willing to engage in polite conversations with people who might be upset for whatever reason. We exchanged quite a few emails. Then, eventually, the ‘bomb’ came. It was an email that was filled with poison. It reminds me of a Scripture verse, “THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING, THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS.” (Romans 3:13, quoting Psalm 130:3)

When the email came, and I read it, the poison was evident.

Now what do you do with poison like that? Do you entertain it, answer it, respond to it, ponder it, think it over? No, a poisoned email deserved but one response: “DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN.” (2 Corinthians 6:17, quoting Isaiah 52:11)

If you touch the unclean thing, you play with foul weapons. These are not something to be toyed around with lightly. It was Satan who motivated the person on the other end to write what he or she did in the first place, and you have nothing to do with Satan! Be careful. Be very careful. You will know it is unclean, because you are a Christian, and the Spirit of Christ dwells in you, and you will know by His Spirit that it is unclean, and not fit for human consumption. DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN!

Recently, I had a similar conversation, through email again, with yet another person (it has now been about 10 years since the last time this happened, so I guess I was due). We bantered back and forth about various items of concern, and then finally, the “big one” came with the same unclean spirit that the first one had (that is, about 10 years ago). And it was most certainly unclean. This thing was a “bomb” sent to me from the dark side, by a man (who, like the first) I trusted and dealt openly with, as I try to do with all people. However, woundedness in this man’s own soul (as with the first), opened him up to being a vehicle for Satan, and so Satan was able to send his “bomb” through the email system. Think not that what I am saying is of minor importance. It is most certainly of very great importance. This is the pattern that Satan uses. He will most often use those whom you have trusted to try and afflict damage. “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.” (Psalm 41:9)

What does one do when such an occurrence happens?

First, RECOGNIZE that you are being subject to a spiritual attack that comes from the dark side.

Second, recognize that the person who sent you the email must be HURTING to have been ensnared by Satan like that. They are (temporarily) vehicles or Satan, like we all are, unfortunately, at times. For example, Simon Peter was a vehicle of Satan when he said to Jesus that Jesus would never be killed (Matthew 16:22). Jesus rebuked him and said, “Get behind me, Satan!” exposing the source of the words (Matthew 16:23). Simon Peter had been an unwitting pawn of Satan, through an unsanctified, confused, mind which later got straightened out – but Simon Peter still got led astray later (Galatians 2:11) and even though we are Christians, apparently submitted to the Lord Jesus Christ, we can all get led astray if we are not very careful to be mindful of the Lord’s interests at all times.

Third, DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN. This principle is extremely important if you are going to hope to be free from the effects of the attack that has been placed upon you by an enemy, that is, Satan. Leave that bomb alone and do not pick it up. That is the principle. If you pick it up, you will get hurt by it. And you do not want to get hurt. Delete the email in its entirety from your system. You may need to communicate to the other person (or you may not) that the email has been purged. You decide how that should work out between you and the Lord. There are a few sensitivities that perhaps only you and the Lord will be able to work out, as you seek Him on this. He will provide the clarity needed in these sensitive areas as you seek Him.

Your spirit is FREE when you have complete rest before the Lord (Colossian 3:15). You should be able to have a PURE, UNADULTERATED, love for that same person, as though he or she was your very best friend, and if not, then you are not FREE like the Lord wants you to be. If you are not FREE, then perhaps you have taken offense, and allowed the enemy’s arrows to penetrate you in some area. Get yourself FREE so you can carry on with the Lord’s work, unhindered.

You have an enemy, and it is not that person with whom you have been having difficulties, whether great or small. His name is Satan, and the Bible says that he “prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). Recognize who your enemy is, and understand that you are fighting in a spiritual war. It is only by being fully obedient to the promptings of God’s Spirit that you will be able to obtain your freedom. Some recommended reading is Ephesians 6 which deals with the whole aspect of spiritual warfare.

The Lord bless you as you consider these things today.
