When the End Time Comes

You know the end time is coming when a movie like “The Passion of The Christ” gets released. I’m not commenting on Mel Gibson’s theology. I don’t agree with some of it. I’m commenting on the fact that the movie got released, and God is not bound by man’s theology to spread the news of himself throughout the whole earth. Yes, you know the end time is coming when the whole earth is “broadcasted” like that with the message of God’s salvation and redemption through Jesus Christ alone.

The end time is definitely coming. We’re definitely fast approaching. Mel Gibson or no Mel Gibson, God has used a man to create a film which, although may not (and will surely not) bring conversion to every soul, yet it is a definite “sign” that the end time is coming, and it is not far now. Why do I say this? Well, for various theological reasons. First, God does not do things unjustly. He is a just God. Do you think it would be just of God to come back and judge the whole earth without first giving mankind an adequate chance to repent of their sins and to turn from their wicked ways?

Now some of you are surely saying, “Are you implying that God is using Mel Gibson’s movie to spread the knowledge of himself throughout the earth so that men will repent and be saved?” Well, yes, of course. That is exactly what God is doing. God wants people to repent. And not to undermine the efforts of thousands or tens of thousands of missionaries who have gone before, or of thousands or tens of thousands of Christian martyrs who have laid down their lives for the cause of Christ, but, yes, God is able, and willing, and may I even say, desires, to use this movie to bring people to a knowledge of himself.

But you have to be careful when you consider about the end result of the movie. While it is true that God desires all to be saved, yet not all will be saved in the end. Jesus said that the road to destruction is broad and that many would choose it (Matthew 7:13). By contrast, Jesus said that the road to life is narrow and only a few (when compared with those who would choose destruction) would choose it (Matthew 7:14). The movie “The Passion of The Christ” may therefore not bring repentance and salvation to all. But it will surely bring responsibility and accountability to those who, in particular, reject it’s message.

Thus, while it is God’s desire to bring about conviction of sin and a turning away from evil through this movie, the movie has another inevitable effect, if not even purpose: That people will be left without excuse when Jesus comes back. Thus, this movie really does “prepare the way” for Jesus’s return in many ways. It is what you’d expect prior to Christ coming back: that there would be a global broadcast of the gospel message throughout the whole earth – through some means which surpasses those which have been used before. Friends, let’s be honest about it. This movie has the power to be put into every home on the planet very quickly. And it is not just a “plain old” movie. It is a movie which centers on the cross of Christ. It is through the cross that we are saved. Without the cross there is no salvation. What Mel Gibson chose to do, I believe he chose to do by God’s inspiration. It is not a movie about the joy, happiness, or disappointments of Jesus Christ, but it is a movie about the cross. Period.

In the past, getting such a message broadcast into every home quickly couldn’t be done. The amount of people that would watch a Billy Graham evangelistic crusade pales by comparison, for example. Even some Muslim officials are begging their governments to allow them to show this movie in their countries. They want to do it for illegitimate purposes, because they think the movie will promote their causes. But when that movie is watched by scores of Muslims worldwide, it will have another effect that they didn’t plan on: First, it will bring about a conviction of sin and a consequential faith in Christ as Lord and Savior of the world for many who watch it. Secondly, as mentioned before, it will bring responsibility and accountability to those who watch it. Not all will be saved, that’s true. But as a result of this movie, the soon and coming return of our Lord Jesus Christ will be made more sure.

Dear friends, the end times (plural) are definitely upon us. They have been since Christ ascended to heaven after his resurrection. But there is an “end time” (singular) that is coming in which the day of Christ’s return will finally be here once and for all. How are you living your life today in light of the soon and coming return of our Lord Jesus Christ? Are you ready to meet him not only as Lord and Savior, but as judge of the whole earth? He is coming. Make no mistake about that.

“But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?” (2 Peter 3:10-12)

“He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 22:20)

(Jesus speaking) “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” (John 14:1-3)
